Prof Lilian Vrijmoed received her PhD from the University of Hong Kong. Her main specialism is in fungal biology. The two main groups of her interests are the marine fungi and indoor fungi. With the marine fungi, she is particularly interested in their morphology and taxonomy, geographical distribution, eco- physiology and their industrial applications. For indoor fungi, she focuses also on their occurrence and eco-physiology in relation to control of indoor air quality and is currently developing molecular methods for the quick identification of these fungi for monitoring purpose. She is an assessor of the Hong Kong Accreditation Services of the Hong Kong SAR Government in microbiology testing. Her consultancy work focuses on surveys of indoor air fungi in industrial and commercial premises. The later includes two large scale investigations on the occurrence of indoor air fungi in office buildings and public places in mid-90s and 2007-2009 commissioned by the Environmental Protection Department. Her academic duties in the Department of Biology and Chemistry involve teaching microbiology related courses such as "Cells and Microorganisms", "Microbiology", "Microbial Physiology" and "Environmental Microbiology" courses in the BSc (Hons) programmes as well being the Microbiology co-ordinator in the planning of the 4-year BSc curriculum. She is currently involved in a number of projects relating to teaching and learning activities in the University, aiming to transform the passive learning mode of students. She was one of the winners of the 1997 and 2004 Teaching Excellence Award of City University and was Dean of Student Learning of CityU between 2005 and 2008. |
