Staff Profile

Professor Yang obtained his BSc from Xiamen University, China (1984), MSc from Simon Fraser University, Canada (1989), and PhD from University of Toronto, Canada (1993). He obtained his postdoctoral training in Molecular Biology in The Scripps Research Institute, USA (1993-1994). He joined City University of Hong Kong in 1994 and is currently a full professor in Department of Biology and Chemistry and the Director of the Applied Research Centre for Genomics Technology. Professor Yang has received over $50 million research grants from external funding agencies and has trained 8 Ph.D. and 4 M.Phil. graduates since 1995. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed scientific papers on the development of novel analytical techniques for biomedical applications and on the studies of biomolecular interactions in cellular processes. His work has been recognized by awards in the Eurasia Chemical Conference (1996) and the Asia-Pacific Conference of Tumor Biology (2001). Professor Yang has been invited to deliver more than 50 lectures in international conferences and many universities and was awarded the K. C. Wong Education Foundation Scholar Award in 2003. He serves in the International Advisory Committee of "The Analyst" (Royal Society of Chemistry) and the Editorial Board of "Life Science Instruments" (Chinese Society of Chemistry). He holds honorary professorships in the University of Hong Kong, Zhejiang University, and The Third Military Medical University, China, and was a "Ministry of Education" senior visiting professor in Tsinghua University in 2003. Professor Yang is also a co-founder and director of Genetel Pharmaceuticals Ltd., a company specializing in developing molecular diagnostic and therapeutic products for early detection and treatment of diseases.
