A Rewarding Experience To Gain International Exposure Through Overseas Internships

Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Canada)

-- Summer Internship Program 2010 --

Overseas internships provide students with ample opportunities to see the world through new eyes and cultivate in them an open attitude towards cultural diversity by immersing them in a completely new living and working environment. Students can gain immensely from internships in many ways too.  Internships can raise students’ academic profile, enrich their personal development and help foster future career prospects, thus enhancing their competitive edge in the global job market.

With the objective to promote the exchange of talents between Hong Kong and Canada, the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Canada has been supporting the summer internship program for HK university students since 2003.  This year, after a very strict selection process, two students from City University were selected to participate in the intensive learning and coaching program and were assigned to its branch office in Toronto for an eight-week internship program from 14th June to 6th August 2010.  As an exercise of the initiation period, they received one to two weeks of familiarization training in which they took up various job-shadowing assignments, and assisted in all areas of work pertaining to specific work divisions.

Tim Chan, an EF undergraduate, worked as a Research Associate in the Division of Investment Promotion at HKETO Canada. One of his challenges was to facilitate foreign direct investment and to promote Hong Kong’s friendly business environment. (For more, please click here to see his reflection report)

Antonia Cheong, a student majoring in English for Professional Communication, was assigned to the Public Relations Division which concentrates on promoting Hong Kong’s interests across Canada with an emphasis on trade and tourism.  As a Public Relations Assistant, Antonia was involved in organizing a series of PR functions and interesting promotional activities. HKETO internship program in Canada organized events and visits for its participants. Tim and Antonia found these exposures useful, helping them to broaden their international outlook and letting them know more about the multicultural aspect of Toronto. Above all, they were also able to develop their social skills and a network of invaluable new friends and future collaborators.

Please stay tuned for the announcement of Career and Leadership Centre on the upcoming HKETO Internship.
