Lighthouse Heritage Research Connections - An Interview with the Magistrate of Penghu County LAI Feng-wei

For the continuation and development of the LHRC project, collaborations from the community are seen as necessary. The Magistrate of Penghu County LAI Feng-wei was invited to review LHRC's project on the Fisher Island Lighthouse and the SS Bokhara shipwreck in Sand Island (one of the Penghu isles). He mentioned The Titanic Belfast Museum in the United Kingdom that was built to commemorate the shipwreck. Through the cooperation between the locals, governments and institutions, Magistrate LAI believes an excellent learning platform for the society can be built. He also hopes to recreate and promote the rich cultural heritage, such as the Fisher Island Lighthouse, by making education materials for primary school students and leading guided tours for Penghu visitors. Magistrate LAI also said that students can understand and discover more about our past in this meaning project, such as the story of the Engineer-in-Chief of the Fisher Island Lighthouse, Mr. David Marr HENDERSON. The lighthouse, which still uses the original rotating optic installed in the 19th century to control the rotation cycles of the light, connects the history of Penghu, Hong Kong as well as the United Kingdom. Different parties, including students of City University of Hong Kong, co-operate and share their resources as they strive to achieve these goals.

19th Century Finance in China

On 10 October 1892, the SS Bokhara shipwrecked on Sand Island (Penghu Islands) with only 23 survivors out of 148 people on board. The Bokhara was also carrying silver and gold bullion, which in modern terms would have been tens of millions of dollars. Why was the Bokhara carrying so much physical bullion?

Lighthouse Heritage Research Connections, with Subject Specialist Stephen DAVIES (HKU), looks into the financial system of China in the nineteenth-century, far removed from today's digitally interlinked world.

Memorials that were erected in memory of the Bokhara victims shed light on the overall significance of memorials and why they are created to preserve historical moments for future generations to understand.

Lighthouse Heritage Research Connections, with Subject Specialist Stephen DAVIES (HKU), looks into the history of memorials and what it can tell us about the past.

Weather Science and Maritime Meteorology

On 10 October 1892, the SS Bokhara shipwrecked on Sand Island (Penghu Islands) with only 23 survivors out of 148 people on board. Nineteenth-century weather science and maritime meteorology was not as advanced as the current century, but still able to illustrate the challenges faced and discoveries made towards understanding the weather.

Lighthouse Heritage Research Connections, with Subject Specialist Stephen DAVIES (HKU), looks into nineteenth-century weather science and maritime meteorology in relations to the shipwreck of the SS Bokhara in 1892.
