Curriculum structure of the 4-year degree

The new curriculum allows students to gain in-depth knowledge through major studies, and diversify their learning with Gateway Education (GE) courses, electives and optional minors. The curriculum structure is as follows:

First-year entrants with Level ‘4’ (or equivalent) and above in the HKDSE English assessment will proceed directly into the GE English courses.

First-year entrants with Level ‘3’ in the HKDSE English assessment will be required to take a minimum of 6 credits of English proficiency courses in the English Language Centre. Students will take additional proficiency courses until they reach the level of proficiency that will enable them to advance to the GE English courses.

Notes for 2012 admission

1.

Students whose entry qualification in English/Chinese is below Level 4 in HKDSE English Language/Chinese Language are required to take additional language courses.

2.

Major and college requirements should not exceed 72 credits. However, with the Senate's approval, the college and school may set a higher limit to meet professional accreditation requirements.

# College core courses of CLASS total 15 credit units. ALL new 4-year degree entrants are required to take CLA1001 in Semester A. Students have to take two College core courses in Semester A -- one course each from Group I and Group II; and similarly two College core courses in Semester B -- one course each from Group I and Group II not taken in Semester A.

* First-year entrants with Level ‘3’ in the HKDSE English assessment will be required to take 6 credits of English for Academic Purposes (EL0200) offered by the English Language Centre until they have reached the desired proficiency to advance to GE English courses. Students taking GE English courses can select GE1401 University English OR a Discipline-Specific English course in Semester A and take the other one in Semester B.
