A new initiative target for the right DSE students

As a new initiative to target the right DSE students to study in the two BA programmes offered by the Department of Linguistics and Translation (LT), the LT Open House 2018 was organised on 22 June 2018. Students from about a dozen schools attended the event. Professor LIU Meichun, Head of LT, welcomed the students and talked about the significance of language and her insights into linguistics and translation. The two Major Leaders Dr Caesar LUN and Mr Kenneth AU then introduced the two BA programmes in a nutshell, followed by Dr Alex FANG, who outlined the exchange programme, and Dr Cecilia CHAN, who talked about study tours at The University of British Columbia and at Shanghai International Studies University. A student representative also shared her sweet experiences about the study tour to Shanghai. Dr Jackie YAN then described the Grand Final of the Seventh Cross-strait Interpreting Contest hosted by LT in late April. The two Major Leaders ended the morning session with a briefing on the Career Seminars of alumni from recent years and the variety of themes in the LT Research Forum series.

After a casual buffet lunch, the secondary school students were given a guided tour of the Simultaneous Interpretation Lab, the Language and Cognition Lab, and the Phonetics Lab. Mr Au closed the event by sharing various admission and interview tips with the students. The participants all left happy after their multi-faceted experience at LT.
