To mark its 10th anniversary, the Department of Media and Communication (COM) hosted a celebration ceremony on 3 November 2018 at the University’s Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre. The event brought together a total of 170 guests from across the globe, including leaders from universities and media industries in the United States, Mainland China, and Hong Kong.

Over the last decade, the department has earned global recognition for its efforts and outstanding achievements in the media and communication sector. COM was ranked 27th in the QS World University Rankings by subject in both 2017 and 2018. The latest Hong Kong Research Assessment Exercise also affirmed the department’s excellence in world-class research and its leading position in the discipline of media and communication in Hong Kong.

Having a diverse international mix of motivated faculty members, the team strives hard to set the standard in teaching and research by publishing in top-tier academic journals, playing leading roles in academic activities worldwide, and extending profound influence on academic communities with their contributions, services and scholarly work of the highest quality.

“In ten years, we have grown from a newly established department in 2008 to an academic unit well blended to the world scholarly community,” said Professor LI Xigen, Head of COM, at the celebration ceremony. President Way KUO was glad to see the COM alumni pursuing their passion on screen as anchors and reporters or behind the scenes as producers and managers at new media companies.

Another highlight of the event was the award presentation to 30 distinguished alumni in recognition of their exceptional achievements in their own profession. Following the ceremony, a forum themed “Journalism and Communication in the Age of Big Data” was held. Eight professors from leading universities in Asia and Europe gave speeches on a variety of topics, covering big data, digital journalism, and communication education.

A series of events such as conference and exhibition of achievements also took place as a toast to celebrate COM’s important milestone.

“COM will continue to play a significant role in research, and contribute to the teaching innovation in media and communication in Hong Kong, Mainland China and beyond,” said Professor ZANG Xiaowei, Dean of CLASS.
