New book explores issues relating to ethnic minorities in China

The Handbook on Ethnic Minorities in China, edited by Professor Xiaowei ZANG, Dean of CLASS, was published in late 2016 through Edward Elgar Publishing. The Handbook reviews research on major ethnic issues in China and addresses some key conceptual, theoretical and methodological issues in the study of ethnicity in China. It presents updated research findings on minority ethnicities, consolidates knowledge from various disciplines in the existing literature and provides readers with multidisciplinary and multifaceted coverage of the topic in a single volume.

Some chapters of the book are based on papers presented at an international conference organised by CLASS under the Global China Studies project in August 2015. The work provides readers with a multi-faceted view of the major issues, with some chapters focusing on key characteristics of China’s main ethnic minorities and others addressing the influence of government policies on ethnic identities and cultures. Ethnic inequality and marginalisation are also discussed, making the work a comprehensive, up-to-date reference volume for anyone teaching or researching related topics.
