Celebrating the success of CLASS graduates

Joyful graduates donned their caps and gowns. Smiling faces filled the campus. Graduates of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) and their parents, relatives and friends, together with faculty and staff members, attended the College Graduation Ceremony held from 27 to 30 November 2017 in the Wong Cheung Lo Hui Yuet Hall at Lau Ming Wai Academic Building of CityU.

Dean of CLASS Professor Xiaowei ZANG and Associate Deans Professor Richard WALKER, Professor Dennis WONG and Dr Peppina LEE presided at various sessions of the Graduation Ceremony. They gave their hearty congratulations to all the graduates and invited the graduates to reflect on what had gone by since they entered CityU. The Dean and Associate Deans also encouraged the graduates to follow their dreams, take the knowledge and open mind they acquired at CityU into society and make contributions to society, no matter how big or small they are.

At the ceremony, graduate representatives from CLASS departments expressed their fervent gratitude to teachers and parents for their guidance and advice in times of trouble and doubt. They also treasured the support and friendship of fellow classmates in sharing the ups and downs of lives. “We will not forget what CityU has brought to us. We will work hard in the rest of our life to help others achieve their goals, to serve and to make our society better!” said HO Hill Tone Bauhinia, graduate representative of Department of Chinese and History.

Psychology graduate YAN Ying-fong Gigi of Department of Applied Social Sciences (SS) was the first student of CLASS to graduate from the Joint Bachelor’s Degree Program between City University of Hong Kong and Columbia University. Gigi received two bachelor’s degrees awarded by CityU and Columbia University respectively. “It’s definitely double joy and happiness for me,” said Gigi. “I feel very honoured and grateful to CityU and CLASS for giving me this previous opportunity to study in the joint program with scholarships. I hope more and more students of CLASS will be able to benefit from the joint program which provides a rich international education and a life-transforming experience to students.”

CHUNG Chui-Ting Tindy, a Criminology graduate of SS, is the world’s 5th woodball player and Sportswoman of the Year in the annual sports competition organised by the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China. Tindy came from a sports family. Her father, Mr CHUNG Kin-man, is the first Hong Kong mountaineer to have conquered the highest peaks on all seven continents. Her mother is a golf and woodball player. Tindy started playing sports when she was young, She took up woodball after joining CityU. “I am very thankful to CityU for all its support to student athletes which allows me to keep up my sports training and academic studies,” said Tindy. “I hope all CityU students will develop their full potentials and never give up.”

On behalf of the College, Professor Dennis Wong extended his sincere congratulations to Gigi and Tindy on their graduation and success. “We are proud of you! Chase your dreams. Live life to the fullest and give it nothing but your best. ”

At the university-wide Congregation held on 11 November 2017, a total of 2,127 academic awards were conferred to graduates of CLASS, comprising 1,076 bachelor’s degrees, 1,013 master’s degrees and postgraduate diplomas/certificates, and 38 doctor and master of philosophy degrees.
