LT Wonderland 2018 – A Fun Week with Language at CityU

Seventy-seven senior secondary students from Hong Kong’s leading schools visited CityU to attend the week-long “LT Wonderland 2018” organised by the Department of Linguistics and Translation (LT) from 23 to 27 July 2018. Nominated by their respective schools because of their expressed interest in linguistics and translation, they came away with their horizons broadened – and some of them were already quite determined to pursue their bachelor’s degree in either linguistics or translation at CityU.

“The study of linguistics is most rewarding, as it can guide translators theoretically and explain much of what goes on in the practice of translation,” said Prof LIU Meichun, Head of LT, in her welcoming speech to the visiting students.

The secondary students were impressed by the lineup of light-hearted talks, demonstrations and sharing sessions by LT professors and students on many linguistics and translation topics. They were especially enthusiastic about the ways in which they were able to make the connection between these two close but independent disciplines.

The climax of the week-long programme was a quiz competition between freely formed teams, which was held in the Senate Room. New knowledge was gained, new friends were made, and a great time was had by all.

LT Wonderland 2018 was organised with the support of the University’s School Outreach and Branding Fund.
