First student of CLASS graduates from the Joint Bachelor’s Degree Program with Columbia University

“Every student and teacher I met, every lesson I took, every day I spent in Columbia University in the past two years was truly unforgettable,” said Gigi YAN Ying-fong at the Columbia University School of General Studies Class Day on 15 May 2017. Gigi Yan has been the first student of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) to graduate from the Joint Bachelor’s Degree Program between City University of Hong Kong and Columbia University. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Columbia and will be conferred a Bachelor of Social Sciences in psychology from CityU this November.

“I was very lucky to be able to study in the Program. The international educational experience is so rich and life-transforming,” said Gigi. “I thank my parents deeply for their love and steadfast support. I am also very grateful to Dr Dannii YEUNG and Dr Tina ROCHELLE, major leader and associate major leader of psychology in the Department of Applied Social Sciences, for providing me with useful advice and guidance throughout my study at Columbia.” Gigi has decided to gain some working experience in the education sector and pursue a master’s degree afterwards.

Gigi was actively involved in serving the General Studies (GS) community. She served as peer advisor, orientation leader, co-chair of the Mid-Semester Success Series, and teaching assistant of a class for new students. Gigi was awarded the Spirit Award by GS in recognition of her outstanding leadership and services to help facilitate the growth and development of other students. In addition, Gigi also actively took part in volunteer activities in New York City, and worked as a Volunteer Outreach Assistant in Sanctuary for Families. Her outstanding services were recognised at the Pillars of Change Volunteer Recognition Event held on 10 May 2017.
