Employers’ Luncheon 2015-16
City University of Hong Kong (CityU) hosted its second annual Employers’ Luncheon on 30 March to showcase the talent of the university’s students to prospective employers; to enable the university to strengthen its connections with global and local businesses; and to convey the remarkable achievements of the university to the public. Dr CHAN Yue-kwong Michael, chairman of Café de Coral Holdings Limited, was the keynote speaker at the event.

This year, more than 20 display panels were created by the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) and its departments. Dr Chan was invited to visit the exhibition before lunch to view the students’ learning achievements and outcomes.

Having majored in sociology and political science at degree level, Dr Chan expressed particular interest in the project advocating reduced meat consumption by students of the Department of Public Policy, and the studies of career development and competency in South Korea by students of the Department of Applied Social Sciences. He was also interested in the short television programme supervised by Mr Peter KWAN from the Department of Media and Communication (COM).

A project entitled “Happiness Index: Comparison of Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea” was also well received. CHAN Ka-tung, one of the students responsible for this project, greatly appreciated the opportunity for face-to-face interaction with Dr Chan and other employers. “The visitors not only listened to our presentation,” she noted, “but provided thought-provoking feedback on our project. Some even gave useful tips for job interviews from the perspective of employers rather than candidates, which had never occurred to us.” Chan Ka-tung also expressed the hope that more student activities of this kind would be arranged in the near future.
