Kunqu Lecture Series: Representations of Love in Tang Xianzu’s Four Dreams

On 10 July 2016, the Chinese Kunqu (昆曲) performer SHEN Yili (沈昳麗) gave a talk on the works of Tang Xianzu (湯顯祖), a world-renowned Chinese playwright of the Ming Dynasty, as part of the Global China Studies Lecture Series.

Ms Shen shared with the audience her love of and passion for Kunqu opera. She provided an introduction to Tang’s Four Dreams (臨川四夢) series, which weaves together the love stories of three female leads. Ms Shen also performed live a scene from The Peony Pavilion (牡丹亭), which concluded the lecture on a perfect note.
