Measuring Hong Kong’s political parties

On 1 September 2016, Dr HE Junzhi, Professor in the School of Government of Sun Yat-sen University, delivered a talk on measuring Hong Kong’s political parties as a part of the Global China Studies Lecture Series 2016/17.

Scholars often differentiate Hong Kong’s political parties according to their ideologies, class identities, and their relationships with the government. However, Dr He pointed out that the study of Hong Kong political parties should go beyond the simple and static typology analysis. He discussed how a more effective method might be developed to measure political parties in Hong Kong in order to understand the complicated and fast-changing political situation. He also suggested the theoretical and policy implications of the study. It would lead to more precise understanding of the political party system, deeper investigation of the dynamics of political parties’ evolvement, and better prediction of future political development.
