香港城市大學媒體與傳播系的教師曾在香港政府2006年舉行的全港大學科研評估中名列媒體與傳播學領域第一位。該系師資陣容強大，均獲英美名校的博士學位，並有多人曾任美國大學終身教授，在國際和大中華地區的傳播學界享有聲望。該系研究範圍廣泛，涉及新聞、傳播、新媒體、廣告、公關等各領域。博士研究生受嚴格的理論和方法訓練，諸多研究成果在SSCI期刊和國際會議上發表，畢業後任職海外或中國內地大學或研究機構。

The Department of Media and Communication has an outstanding international faculty, including many world-renowned scholars in the field of Communications. We are at the forefront of research in international communication, media effects, new media, and political economy.

We invite students with strong promise and commitment to apply for our Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in communications. Students with BA, MA or M.Phil degrees may apply for admission to the PhD program. Please note that we do NOT wish to admit M.Phil students anymore.

Successful candidates will receive generous studentships covering tuition and a stipend (approx. HK$13,000 per month) for a duration of three to four years. Additional research scholarships are also available. Given the large number of applications, competition is very keen.

We investigate the structures, processes, and effects of various modes of media communications in relation to their larger political, economic, and cultural implications. Our research is focused on its broad relevance to Chinese societies, but situated in global and comparative contexts. Among the research topics we conduct are:
