About the Scheme

Cultural and Language Immersion Scheme (CALIS)  >  About the Scheme

The purpose of CALIS is to help students improve their communication skills in English through immersion in overseas language learning and community activities. The scheme includes intensive English language instruction, cultural and social activities as well as community service projects designed by our overseas partner institutions.

Successful completion of the scheme will enable students to communicate in English with increased confidence and ability to use English for academic purposes. Students will have a greater awareness of and empathy toward the target culture, thus gain a better understanding of the inter-cultural differences between Hong Kong and the host country. The ultimate goal is the application of language learning strategies and cross-cultural communicative skills for use in multi-cultural environments.

CALIS offered by CSE is for Year 1 & 2 CSE students.  BST and CS students, however, should contact respective home departments for CALIS arranged at departmental level.  The contents of CALIS (CSE) and CALIS (BST & CS) are basically the same.  The 4-week programme will take place in the UK where students will take the IELTS test immediately afterwards. Apart from studying, students will visit famous scenic spots, do community services and take part in sports and cultural activities. CALIS is a wonderful programme that students should not miss.
