This course starts with an introduction to social science theories of risk and risk management process. Building on this fundamental knowledge are applications to and explanations of situations and issues of risk in modern society at three levels: individual, society, and global. The last topic deals with a question: how, then, shall we live in the risk society?

This course adopts the following teaching and learning activities:

1. Interactive seminars where the lecturer plays a facilitator role in class discussions;

2. Group presentations and debates on topics assigned by the lecturer;

3. Experts from within CityU and/or non-academic risk management practitioners will be brought into the classroom;

4. Discussions beyond the classroom using e-platforms such as Discussion Board and Facebook.
