Architectural design plays an increasingly prominent role in major cities around the world. This course develops students’ understanding of the aesthetic, spatial, functional, social, historical and technical aspects of contemporary architecture, thereby helping them to better appreciate it. Through exposure to key international and local building designs, students explore the major architects and the theories and designs of contemporary architecture, and learn to appreciate their merits and inter-relationships from a critical perspective. In addition to acquiring the fundamental knowledge needed in the appreciation of contemporary architecture, students also develop essential and transferable skills in critical thinking, design/visual thinking, research, team-work, communication and self-reflection. Learning activities include lectures, building visits, a virtual architectural tour, guest seminars and small-group case study discussions.
