Agricultural and industrial activities discharge organic matter, chemicals or heavy metals into water. In many places this threatens the availability of drinking water and causes human health impacts.
In the meantime, human water demands are increasing due to burgeoning population, but with limited improvements in water-use efficiency.
How serious is the situation?
- More than 600 million people lack access to safe drinking water.
- 2.5 billion people do not have good sanitation facilities.
