Sustainability Talk at Johns Hopkins University

Davis Bookhart was Senior Manager & Head of Sustainability Unit at Johns Hopkins University for eight years prior to moving the HKUST. He shared his insights on how Johns Hopkins University students helped create & implement its comprehensive sustainability master plan. He noted:

  • Addressing barriers to change
  • Develop functional metrics to gauge success

2) The sustainability mindset starts with four ideas:

3) The key barriers and ways to overcome them:

4) The idea that everyone has a role to play in greening the university was promoted through the Johns Hopkins Sustainability Network brand. This brand, which is shown at the top of this page, became a personality which students and staff identified with. It became associated with ideas that:

  • Everyday decisions matter
  • Everyone can contribute
  • We are all in this together
  • It is not WHAT you do, but HOW you do it. So everyone’s Job can be a “Green” Job if it is done right
