Feed People NOT Landfills
On 6th February 2013, Gabrielle Kirstein, Executive Director of Feeding HK, came to CityU and shared her views on the food waste problem in Hong Kong.
Over 3,200 tons of foods are sent to landfills every day in HK. More than 40% of them are edible! Three landfills in HK are expected to be saturated by 2018. How to solve the problem?
Wait! How can food waste be a problem? 'Food' is not equal to 'Waste'! Feeding Hong Kong tries to connect food waste and hunger in Hong Kong. Feeding Hong Kong is the only food bank in Hong Kong dedicated to redistributing surplus food to people in need. They bridge the partners in the food industry and the charities. Food companies give surplus foods which are still fresh to them free of charge, and they sort and deliver to the charities.
Mr Christopher Mattison, Assistant Director of Hong Kong Advanced Institute for Cross-Disciplinary Studies, gives a short introduction for the talk.
Gabrielle shares how Feeding Hong Kong contributes to food waste problem.
Bread Run is one of the volunteering activities of them. CityU Special Bread Run will be held on 28 Feb 2013. We are recruiting volunteers for the event! Click to know more: here
