Mental Health across Disciplines

Workshop Information

The “Mental Health across Disciplines” workshops will explore and develop research beyond the traditional boundaries of individual disciplines in mental health. The aim is to enhance the visibility of cross‐disciplinary research in mental health and provide a legacy of networking and innovative collaboration, not least in considering how aspects of Chinese culture might be applied in new ways to mental health problems or issues. The series will seek new confluences of mental health research including but not limited to notions of nation, city and community.

With regard to nation, possible approaches may derive from history, colonial forms of medical planning, indigenous traditions of healing, religion and spirituality, literary representations, language, politics of health, trauma and memory, etc. The city is of increasing interest in the areas of urban planning for human well‐being, ecology, environment, design and creativity, cultural geography, etc. Last, but not least, it is hoped that such research also relates to the local community, sharing in such areas as art therapies, health care education, and social work.

The series of workshops will focus on making visible some of the cross‐disciplinary research in mental health beyond more traditional or single discipline approaches and exploring the application of crossdisciplinary research in clinical service configuration or interventions in mental health. The emphasis will be on ‘novel’ combinations of knowledge to enhance cross‐disciplinary and cross‐cultural contexts for, understanding of, and specific responses to mental health challenges, problems or issues. The first exploratory workshop on “Mental Health across Disciplines” will be held June 23‐24, 2011. It will focus on the contributions of literature, linguistics and art in Health Humanities and is meant to be a first initiative that will lead to further cross‐disciplinary workshops in the future.
