Abstract Speed sensors are customarily used to detect the speed of power electronic driven motors, but that speed sensors could render the motor drive system unreliable. However, there are very few detection devices other than speed sensors that can generate readings when the motor drives are in a resting mode. The present invention overcomes the problem stated above by sampling the instantaneous motor current and obtaining the rate of change of the current. The instantaneous motor speed can then be derived from the known inverter switching states and motor parameters at all speeds, including zero speed. The readings of motor speed thus derived are instantaneous under all motor speeds.
Uniqueness and Competitive Advantage • Lower operation cost
• Higher reliability

Applications The apparatus can be used to provide speed information under all speed conditions. It can be applied to both AC and DC motors driven by power electronic converters.
