Seminars & conferences / CityU fosters academic exchanges on trade and economics
    By Karen Cheng

City University of Hong Kong (CityU) hosted an international conference in conjunction with National Taiwan University to foster academic exchanges on issues relating to trade and economic development.

The 2007 APJAE (Asia-Pacific Journal of Accounting and Economics) Symposium on Strategic Trade Theory and Economic Development, which was held at CityU from 18 to 19 May, featured a dozen distinguished speakers from Hong Kong, the mainland and overseas.

The symposium underscores CityU's efforts to promote international exchanges on global issues among academics.

Professor James Brander from the University of British Columbia, Canada, kicked off the two-day conference with a keynote speech on "Intellectual Property Protection as Strategic Trade Policy".

During the five panel sessions, speakers had the opportunity to discuss topics such as genetically-modified products and counterfeiting, antidumping regulations, outsourcing by contracts, as well as trade, transport and inter-governmental cooperation.

Professor Eden Yu Siu-hung, Head of CityU's Department of Economics and Finance and the APJAE editor, said this was the first time CityU and National Taiwan University had co-organized the symposium.

Professor Yu added that the status of the journal had been raised from an inter-departmental to an inter-university and inter-regional publication because National Taiwan University was a co-publisher this year.

APJAE is an international forum for theoretical and empirical research in all areas of economics, finance and accounting, and, in particular, the interface of all three.

The 2007 APJAE symposium was co-organized by CityU's Department of Economics and Finance, Faculty of Business and the Research Center for International Economics, as well as the College of Social Science of National Taiwan University.
