School of Data Science

The Council has approved the establishment of the School of Data Science, effective from 1 July 2018. The new School aims to become a world-class hub for data science education and research. To support this strategic development, Professor Li Duan, Associate Provost (Strategic Planning) and Chair Professor of Operations Research, has been appointed as Acting Dean.   



New appointments

Professor David Joseph Srolovitz has been appointed as Chair Professor of Materials Science in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. He assumed duty on 22 June 2018. Professor Srolovitz obtained his PhD degree from the University of Pennsylvania, US. Before joining us, Professor Srolovitz was the Joseph Bordogna Professor of Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr John Lin Zhang has been appointed as the new Head of the Division of Building Science and Technology with effect from 1 September 2018. Dr Lin obtained his PhD degree from Massey University in New Zealand. He joined CityU in 1995 and is currently Associate Professor in the Division.
  
Professor Robert Li Kwok-yiu, Associate Dean of College of Science and Engineering, has been appointed as Associate Dean of the Chow Yei Ching School of Graduate Studies.



IAS workshop

Research into the exciting interrelationship of studies on genomes, cells and mathematics will be the focus of a major month-long international workshop organised by our Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) starting on 4 July, and lasting throughout the month. CityU Distinguished Lectures

The Rt Hon. The Lord Jonathan Mance will give a talk titled “The Borders of Legislative, Executive and Judicial Power: Differences in Constitutional Traditions” on 10 July. Lord Mance became Deputy President of the Supreme Court in the UK in September 2017 following his original appointment as a Justice of the Supreme Court in October 2009. Later the same day, Professor Brian D. O. Anderson, Emeritus Professor of the Research School of Information Sciences and Engineering at Australian National University, will deliver a lecture titled “Beyond Consensus and Polarisation: Complex Social Phenomena in Social Networks”. On 16 July, Professor Shanto Iyengar, Chandler Chair in Communication and Professor of Political Science at Stanford University, will give a talk titled “Origins and Consequences of Affective Polarization in the United States”. Kudos

Dr Yue Xiaodong, Associate Professor of the Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences, has been awarded the 2018 Outstanding Contribution Award for promoting psychological sciences in China by the Chinese Psychological Society. Dr Yue has been recognised for his achievements and leadership in promoting counselling psychology as well as positive psychology in Chinese societies, and especially for his pioneering contributions to the study of happiness and mental well-being in China over the past 25 years.

Two students studying for the BSc Computer Science, Lai Wing-hang and Chik Ho-ming, together with a student from the Department of Electronic Engineering, Hui Kam-leung, and one from the Department of Information Systems, Sung Hiu-tung, were runners-up in the 2nd PwC Hackaday competition. The students were tested on their skills and knowledge in four hacking categories: network, web, binary and internet-of-things.
