| Matching
grants
The University Grants Committee (UGC) has announced the launch of the
Fourth Matching Grant Scheme, which will be open for application with
effect from 1 January 2008 to 28 February 2009. There will be a provision
of HK$1 billion matching grants for private donations secured by the eight
UGC-funded institutions and two self-financing local universities. In
general, the same basic principles of the Third Matching Grant Scheme
will be adopted for the fourth round. An amount of HK$45 million for matching
will be set aside as the 'floor amount', i.e. a guaranteed minimum, for
each institution up to 31 December 2008. An upper limit of HK$250 million
(i.e. the ceiling) that an institution can claim on a first-come-first-served
basis will also apply. Details of the Scheme will be dispatched to Deans
and Department Heads and posted on the CityU website.

| Court in
session
The Court, the supreme advisory body of City University of Hong Kong (CityU),
was formed and held its first meeting on 7 December. The Court is one
of the three statutory bodies established under the CityU Ordinance, together
with the Council and the Senate, responsible for providing general support
and advice on the work and operations of the University. Members of the
Court include the Principal Officials of the University; the Deputy President,
the Vice-Presidents, the Deans and their equivalent; Members of the Council;
Members of the Senate; and not more than 20 members appointed by the Chancellor
on the recommendation of the Council.

| BC receives
donation of quantity surveying software
The Department of Building and Construction has received a $1.7m donation
of quantity surveying software from Davis Langdon & Seah Hong Kong
Limited (DLS). The software will be used to help equip students to use
computer software in their quantity surveying work. In appreciation of
the generous donation, a ceremony will be held on 19 December, attended
by the Chairman of DLS Mr Joseph Lee Ying-kee, Managing
Director of DLS Mr Kenneth Poon Kan-young, Dean of the
Faculty of Science and Engineering Professor (Chair) Chan Chi-hou
and Head of the Department of Building and Construction Professor
(Chair) Sritawat Kitipornchai.

| Public lecture
The School of Law is going to organise a public lecture on "Globalisation
and Legal Education" on 22 December 2007. The speaker, Professor
Michael Reisman, is one of the International Advisory Board (IAB)
members and a distinguished professor at Yale Law School. Professor
Wang Guiguo, Dean & Professor (Chair) of Chinese and Comparative
Law will give remarks. Attending guests include Mr Lester Huang,
President of the Law Society of Hong Kong, Mr Rimsky Yuen,
Chairman of the Hong Kong Bar Association, Mr Philip Dykes,
Barrister-at-law and one of the IAB members, and Mr Gilbert Mo,
Acting Law Draftsman, Department of Justice of the HKSAR Government.

| Literary
awards
CityU is hosting the third City Literary Awards, a writing competition
that is now open for entries. Through the competition, CityU is encouraging
youngsters to participate in creative writing and promoting the literary
culture of Hong Kong and Macau. The theme of the competition is "City
Movement" and there are three categories: prose, short story and
poetry. All local and Macau residents aged between 15 and 24 are welcome
to take part. The winners will be selected by prominent writers, including
Ms Zhang Yihe and Mr Lu Hao (prose);
Mr Wang Meng, Professor Pai Hsien-yung
and Mr Chang Ta-chuan (short stories); Mr Leung
Ping-kwan (Ya Shi), Mr Bei Dao and Professor
Cheng Chou-yu (poetry).

| Robotics
contest
Entries are being accepted for the regional stage of the Hong Kong Underwater
Robot Challenge 2008, organised by CityU and WWF. The contest will see
teams of secondary and university students design, build and operate their
underwater robots. Winners will earn the chance to travel to the 2008
International Finals held at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography¡VUniversity
of California, San Diego, California, US, in June 2008, subject to satisfactory
sponsorship arrangements. The competition theme focuses on hydrothermal
events found at mid-ocean ridges and the technologies used to study these
deep-sea environments.

| Challenge
Cup
CityU students grabbed six awards at the 10th Challenge Cup national competition
held at Nankai University, Tianjin, in November. The competition attracted
student teams from the mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau and Singapore,
promoting academic and science/technological research and study. Student
teams from CityU's Electronic Engineering, Computer Science and Economics
and Finance departments were first-runner ups, while those from Information
Systems, Marketing and Physics and Materials Science departments collected
the second-runner up prizes. Held every two years, the competition is
organised by the Ministry of Education, Communist Youth League of China,
China Association for Science and Technology and All-China Students' Federation.

| Kudos
David Chung, an EngD (EM) student supervised by Dr
Richard Fung Ying-kit of MEEM, won the World Summit Award (WSA)
Contest (2007) in the e-Business Category. This award is the only one
representing Hong Kong in the past three WSA. This year, the WSA Grand
Jury evaluated over 650 entries which were nominated from 168 countries
to the Global WSA. The Jury selected the five most outstanding products
as winners in each of the eight WSA categories: e-Government, e-Learning,
e-Health, e-Inclusive, e-Business, e-Culture, e-Entertainment and e-Science.
