| UGC visit
Members of the University Grants Committee (UGC) paid a visit to CityU
on 11 January. The visit was part of a series of university visits by
the Committee aimed at fostering a better understanding between the Committee
and Hong Kong universities and to enhance direct communication with institutions'
staff and students. After a briefing on major new developments at CityU,
its teaching, learning and research strategies, the UGC representatives
visited the School of Creative Media, the Centre for Marine Environmental
Research and Innovative Technology, and met with staff and students.

| Groundbreaking
ceremony
City University of Hong Kong (CityU) held the groundbreaking ceremony
on 7 January for the Community College of City University (CCCU) Building,
one of the new buildings on campus catering to the University's long-term
development needs. Officiating guests at the ceremony were Mr
Raymond Wong Hung-chiu, JP, Permanent Secretary for Education;
Mr Chung Shui-ming, GBS, JP, Chairman of Council of CityU;
Professor Richard Ho Yan-ki, Acting President, CityU;
Mr Vincent Chow Wing-shing, BBS, JP, Chairman of Board
of Management, CCCU; and Ms Jennifer Ng Glok-hong, CCCU
Principal. Mr Wong addressed the ceremony and said CityU is one of the
leading pioneers in sub-degree education in Hong Kong, with one in every
three associate degree students in Hong Kong studying at CityU. The 40,000-square
metre CCCU Building will reside on the slope behind the campus's Sports
Complex, housing a state-of-the-art resources centre, design studios,
computer and language laboratories, a student canteen, classrooms, lecture
theatres and audio-video and multi-purpose rooms. It is scheduled for
completion in April 2010.

| Eradicating
plastic bags
CityU is collaborating with Greeners Action, a non-profit organisation
concerned with local environmental problems, to hold the "No Plastic
Bag Tuesday" campaign. It will be held every Tuesday, from 15 January
to 13 May 2008. Outlets such as the Student Canteen, City Chinese Restaurant,
City Top, Garden Cafe, The Sandwich Club, Homey Kitchen in Student Residence,
SU Cut Price Shop and the Book Shop will no longer provide plastic bags
on these days. If customers want to use plastic bags, they are asked to
pay 50 cents per bag. All donations will then go to Greeners Action to
be put towards environmental education.

| Spanish
art exhibition
The CityU Gallery will, from 29 January to 5 March, exhibit a collection
of contemporary mixed-media artworks created by the Spanish artist Mr
Mario Pasqualotto. The artist will be in attendance at the opening
ceremony on 29 January, to be officiated by Mr Juan Luis Flores
Arroyuelo, Consul General of Spain in Hong Kong; Professor
Richard Ho Yan-ki, Acting President; Mr James Ng Kam-ming,
Executive Director of CityU Extension; and Professor Martin Painter,
Acting Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

| Marine research
forum
About 150 marine environmental scientists, academics and students from
Hong Kong and the mainland attended a symposium on climate change and
marine pollution at CityU from 9–10 January. The symposium was a joint
effort between the Centre for Marine Environmental Research and Innovative
Technology led by CityU and the State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental
Science, Xiamen University. It provided a forum for scientific exchange
and technical communication between scientists in Hong Kong and the mainland,
providing useful information for formulating policies and devising cost-effective
environmental solutions.

Law Fair
The School of Law will participate as one of the exhibitors in the upcoming
Hong Kong Law Fair 2008. The exhibition will be held from noon to 4 pm
on 26 January (Saturday) at Hall A1, Hong Kong Exhibition Centre. Other
exhibitors include international and major Hong Kong law firms, the Hong
Kong Bar Association and Department of Justice HKSAR Government.

| Bright ideas
earn acclaim
Seven teams of marketing students from CityU received Student Marketing
Consultancy Project Awards on 10 January. They were among the 95 final
year students from the Department of Marketing who conducted marketing
research and delivered proposals for 10 brands from seven local and international
corporations. The students completed their projects between September
and December 2007.

| Kudos
Dr Yang Zhilin, Associate Professor in the Department
of Marketing, received a Distinguished Track Paper award in the Supply
Chain Management category at the 38th Annual Meeting of the Decision Sciences
Institute. The award-winning paper entitled "Relational Governance
in Buyer-Supplier Relationships: Structures, Processes, and Performance
Implications" was co-authored by Dr Shaohan Cai
of Lakehead University and Dr Minjoon Jun of New Mexico
State University.
Jonathan Hui Ka-chun, from the Department
of Building and Construction and a 2006 Associate of Science in Architectural
Studies graduate, won an honourable mention (undergraduate category) in
the 2007 Sustainable Architecture Student Awards organised by the Hong
Kong Institute of Architects. In addition, three 2007 graduates of the
Associate of Science in Construction Engineering and Management,
Tong Ka-lun, Lui Ho-lung and Leung Shuk-yin,
were merit winners in the Occupational Safety and Health Council Best
Project Award for their project "the 4D-storey Tower Block".
