Muslim symposium 
The Southeast Asia Research Centre (SEARC) is staging a symposium on "Interrogating gendered power structures: Developing a transformative research framework for women’s empowerment in Muslim contexts" on 25 February. The symposium is organised in collaboration with the key partners of the Research Programme Consortium on Women’s Empowerment in Muslim Contexts, a five-year multi-country research programme led by SEARC.


English symposium 
The English Language Arts Symposium organised by the Department of English will be held on 21 February. The symposium includes a seminar "No Fear Shakespeare: Introduction to Genius" and two workshops, "Drama in English Language Education" and "Digital Storytelling". Teachers and educators are welcomed at this event marking the 20th anniversary of the MA in Teaching English as a Second Language programme. For details, please visit http://www.cityu.edu.hk/en.

 

City Cultural Salon 
The Cultural and Sports Committee will organise the City Cultural Salon "Art of guqin: The history and development" at 7pm on 24 February, in the Multi-media Conference Room. Renowned guqin player Mr Yao Gongbai will discuss the development of the art of guqin and a performance will be given. Attendance is by invitation.

 

Student honours 
CityU students received four honours at the 2008 Hong Kong Information and Communications Technology (HKICT) Awards. Po Wing-pong, Poon Shuk-kwan and Lau Ka-yi of the School of Creative Media were awarded a Certificate of Merit in the Best Digital Entertainment Award (College and Undergraduates) for their installation art "Draw Attention". Yip Ka-wai, Yan Chon-wan, Wan Lik-kwong and Lam Ying-ting, and two graduates Cheung King-tai and Lai Chi-ngai in the same school, received a Special Mention in the Best Digital Entertainment Award (College and Undergraduates) for their installation art "King of the Court" and "Web Radio" respectively. Yeung Wing-yee, a Department of Computer Science student, won the Best Innovation and Research Award (College and Undergraduates) Bronze Award for her project "Creation of 3D Model from 2D Floor Plan".


Video prize  
Yeung Chin-kwan, a Year One student of the Associate of Arts in Media Technology programme, received a silver award in the open category of the "Wealth and Life" video competition organised by the Independent Commission Against Corruption. Yeung Chin-kwan was both the director and scriptwriter of his award-winning video Would that be you?.


Literary Awards 
The City Literary Awards have received an overwhelming response, prompting the organising committee extend the contribution deadline to 28 February.
