New appointments 
Professor Gary Feng Gang has been appointed Associate Provost for Academic Planning and Undergraduate Education with immediate effect until 30 September 2011. This is a concurrent appointment along with his present position as Professor in the Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management. Professor Feng will be responsible for matters related to academic planning and undergraduate education, such as 3-3-4 undergraduate academic reform and development.

Two new heads of department have been appointed in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Professor Lee Chin-chuan has been appointed Head of Department of Media and Communication with immediate effect until 30 June 2012. Professor Kingsley Bolton is the new Chair Professor of English with immediate effect until 31 March 2014 and will serve concurrently as Head of Department of English to 30 March 2012.

 

Crime symposium 
In commemoration of CityU's silver jubilee and the 20th anniversary of the Department of Applied Social Studies, an International Symposium on Preventing Offending and Reducing Re-offending, is being held on 15 April in the Wei Hing Theatre. This symposium is co-organised by the Hong Kong Correctional Services Department and The Society of Rehabilitation and Crime Prevention, Hong Kong.

 

Built Expo 
The Division of Building Science and Technology (BST) will showcase their students' building and construction works at Built Expo 2009 under the theme "Built Environment Revitalisation" on 17-18 April. Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, Secretary for Development, will officiate at the opening ceremony with Mr Pau Shiu-hung, Chairman of Divisional Advisory Committee, BST, and Dr Paul Ho Hok-keung, Head of BST.

 

Technology expo 
CityU's Knowledge Transfer Office will feature nine projects at the International ICT Expo 2009 to be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from 13-16 April. The Expo is organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council.

 

Law conference 
The School of Law will host the International Conference on Mediation on 15-16 April in the Multi-media Conference Room. Themes to be explored include a comparative view of court referred mediation and lessons to be learned from other jurisdictions, the mediation of commercial disputes, the Chinese experience of mediation, mediation of international disputes and a comparative mediation-arbitration discussion.

 

Leadership award
Chair Professor Lai Kin-keung
, Department of Management Sciences, has been named a recipient of the Joon S Moon Distinguished International Alumni Award presented by the International Studies and Programmes at Michigan State University. The award recognises outstanding achievements and leadership internationally.

 

Japanese grant 
Dr Charlie Xue Qiuli
, Assistant Professor of the Division of Building Science and Technology, has been awarded a research grant by The Sumitomo Foundation of Japan for his project "The architectural legacies of Kisho Kurokawa (1934-2007) in China". This is the second time he has received this grant. Dr Xue's was one of 67 projects to be awarded among the 267 applications from 12 countries this year.
