President’s lecture 
Professor Way Kuo, President and University Distinguished Professor, will deliver the President’s Lecture: Reliability in the 21st Century on 6 October, 4:30pm, in the Wei Hing Theatre. The lecture is one of the signature events of CityU’s 25th anniversary celebrations. Seats are available on a first-come first-served basis, please visit www.cityu.edu.hk/cityu25/ to enroll.

 

International treaties lecture 
The School of Law will host a public lecture as part of its Eminent Speakers Lecture Series on “Issues concerning International Treaties applicable to Hong Kong”, featuring Mr Hu Zhiqiang, Director, Department of Treaty and Law, The Commissioner’s Office of China’s Foreign Ministry in HKSAR. The lecture will take place on 22 September at the Multi-media Conference Room.

 

Science and humanities lecture 
As part of the Humanities Lecture Series organised by the Run Run Shaw Library, Professor Zhang Longxi, Chair Professor of Comparative Literature and Translation, will present a lecture on “Vision, Imagination and Creativity: Bridging the Gap Between Sciences and the Humanities”. The discussion will focus on the idea of creativity from a cross-cultural perspective and try to bridge the gaps not only between science and art, but also between the East and the West. The lecture will take place at the Library on 15 September, from 3:30pm. 

 

Culture conference 
The International Conference on East/West Cultural Exchange and its Heritage will be held from 24-25 September in the Multi-media Conference Room. The event celebrates the launch of the new Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Cultural and Heritage Management programme offered by the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics.

 

Creative media exhibition 
Creative Media students will stage the “Playful Media” exhibition at the new Multi-purpose Lobby of the Library from 15 September to 12 October. Animation, photography, computer games and installation works will be on show.

 

Best paper award 
Eva Loi I-ha, Year 2 MPhil Biology and Chemistry student, won the Otto Hutzinger Student Award at the 29th International Symposium on Halogenated Persistent Organic Pollutants (Dioxin 2009) held in Beijing for her paper titled "Partitioning behaviour and trophic transfer of perfluorinated compounds in Hong Kong Mai Po Tidal Shrimp Ponds, China". The conference provided an international interdisciplinary forum for the communication of the latest scientific advances relating to environmental problems involving dioxins and other persistent organic pollutants.

 

Athletics meet 
The 16th CityU Annual Athletic Meet (2009-2010) will be held on 11 October at Joint Sports Centre, Renfrew Road. Students, staff and their dependent children are welcome to join the event jointly organised by the Physical Education Section of Student Development Services and Students’ Union and sponsored by the Cultural and Sports Committee. Registrations close on 25 September.
