Teaching Excellence Awards
Six teachers received the Teaching Excellence Awards 2012–13 on 4 March in recognition of their contributions to raising the quality of teaching at the University. They were: Ms Wisteria Cheung Yuen-yi, Teaching Fellow, Department of Marketing; Dr Alice Chong Ming-lin, Associate Professor, Department of Applied Social Studies; Dr Chow Chi-yin, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science; Dr Christoph Hafner, Assistant Professor, Department of English; Dr Ron Kwok Chi-wai, Associate Professor, Department of Information Systems; and Dr Tom Vinaimont, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics and Finance.

 

President's Lecture
Professor Ron Chen Guanrong, Chair Professor of Electronic Engineering and Director of the Centre for Chaos and Complex Networks, will deliver a lecture titled "From One to Infinity" in the next President's Lecture Series on 12 March. Professor Chen has been engaged in the research of chaos theory for the past 20 years and is renowned for his discovery of the "Chen System" — a reputed chaos system well known to the international academic community.

 

Distinguished lecture
Professor Herbert Waldmann, Director of Department of Chemical Biology, Max-Planck-Institute of Molecular Physiology and Full Professor of Organic Chemistry at University of Dortmund, will deliver a City University Distinguished Lecture titled "Hunting the Targets of Biologically Relevant Small Molecules" on 25 March.

 

Japanese Tea Room
CityU cooperates with Chado Urasenke Tankokai Hong Kong Association to set up a Japanese Tea Room on campus to promote Chado (The Way of Tea). An opening ceremony will be held on 11 March, which will be officiated by Dr Sen Genshitsu, the 15th generation Grand Master of the Urasenke Tradition of Tea, Dr Chow Yei-ching, President of Chado Urasenke Tankokai Hong Kong Association, and Professor Way Kuo, President of CityU. Dr Genshitsu will also give a lecture titled "The Essence of the Way of Tea: The Way to Peace" on the same day.

 

"Your City Your Politics" public seminar series
The Department of Public and Social Administration will organise a series of public seminars under the theme "Your City Your Politics". The Hon Chan Chi-chuen, Legislative Council (LegCo) member, will talk about sexual orientation discrimination on 13 March; Dr The Hon Jasper Tsang Yok-sing, President of the Legislative Council, will be the speaker of the talk on LegCo culture on 18 March; Professor Lui Tai-lok, Head of the Department of Sociology at the University of Hong Kong, will discuss the identity and conflicts between Hong Kong people and mainlanders on 21 March.
