Honorary awards
CityU will confer honorary doctoral degrees on four prominent dignitaries, namely Dr Chan Sui-kau, Professor Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, Ms Elizabeth Wang Ming-chun and Sir Gordon Wu Ying-sheung, in recognition of their significant contributions to education, learning and the well-being of society. The conferment of these honorary awards will be held on 8 November 2007 during the 2007 Congregation.

Dr Chan, founder and Executive Chairman of Yangtzekiang Garment Ltd, will receive an Honorary Doctor of Social Science; Professor Cohen-Tannoudji, a Nobel laureate, will receive an Honorary Doctor of Science; Ms Wang, an acclaimed artist, will receive an Honorary Doctor of Letters; and Sir Gordon Wu, Chairman of Hopewell Holdings Ltd and former Council Chairman of CityU, will receive an Honorary Doctor of Social Science.


Naming of SGS
The School of Graduate Studies (SGS) has been named the Chow Yei Ching School of Graduate Studies. The announcement was made at the "Dialogue with Dr Chow Yei Ching cum Thanksgiving Party" on 24 August in appreciation of Dr Chow's contributions to education and support for the development of CityU's graduate studies.

 

Distinguished membership
Distinguished membership Professor (Chair) Roderick Wong Sue-cheun, Vice-President (Research) and Dean of Graduate Studies, has been elected to the European Academy of Sciences where he joins an elite group of scientists including Nobel laureates and Fields Medalists. The European Academy of Sciences is a non-profit, non-governmental, independent organization comprising distinguished scholars and engineers at the forefront of research and advanced technologies. Members are united by a commitment to promoting science and technology and fostering social and economic development.

 

Senior appointments
Professor (Chair) Wang Guiguo has been appointed Dean of the School of Law for a term of three years with effect from 1 August 2007 to 31 July 2010. Professor Wang graduated from Beijing Foreign Studies University and obtained his LLM from the Columbia Law School in New York and a JSD degree from the Yale Law School. He initiated setting up the International Advisory Board for the School of Law.

Professor Stephen Hsu has been appointed Professor (Chair) of Manufacturing Engineering and concurrently Head of the Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management. He will assume duty on 14 September. Professor Hsu received his PhD degree from Pennsylvania State University. Prior to joining CityU, he was Professor of Engineering at George Washington University.

 

SLW's IAB inaugural meeting
The School of Law has formed an International Advisory Board (IAB) which held its inaugural meeting on 31 August. A roundtable discussion on "Globalization and Legal Education" chaired by Professor Richard Ho Yan-ki, Acting President, was conducted immediately after the inauguration ceremony.

The IAB comprises 13 members, including renowned professors from elite universities such as Harvard, Yale and Oxford and experienced legal practitioners, and aims to further enhance teaching and research and to provide CityU law students with opportunities to exchange ideas with international legal experts. The establishment of the IAB is a major milestone for the School of Law as it marks its 20th anniversary this year.


City Cultural Salon
The Cultural and Sports Committee will organize its first City Cultural Salon on 20 September, to be held at 7pm at the Multi-media Conference Room. Professor Richard Ho Yan-ki, Acting President, and Professor (Chair) Horace Ip Ho-shing in the Department of Computer Science, will share their thoughts on painting and Chinese calligraphy.

 

Innovative CityU products at Innovation Expo
Innovative products developed by CityU researchers will be on display at the Innovation Expo 2007, organized by the Innovation and Technology Commission, from 14 to 18 September at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. A strong line-up of about 50 exhibits is the collective contribution from various departments, including Biology and Chemistry; Building and Construction; Chinese, Translation and Linguistics; Computer Science; Electronic Engineering; Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management; and Physics and Materials Science; as well as the School of Creative Media and the Language Information Sciences Research Centre.

 

Sculpture and jet print exhibition
The CityU Gallery will present "Colour Play ¡X Tong King Sum's Sculpture and Jet Print Exhibition" from 18 September to 19 October. An opening ceremony will be held on 18 September with Mr Ma Fung-kwok, Chairman of Hong Kong Arts Development Council, and Professor Steve Ching Hsianghoo, University Librarian, as officiating guests. Open daily from 10am to 7pm, the exhibition will feature about 10 sculptures and over 40 jet print works.

 

External appointment
Dr Yue Xiaodong, Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Social Studies, has been re-elected Chair of the Division of Counseling Psychology of the Hong Kong Psychological Society for the year 2007-08.
