University Charter of Social Responsibility Environemtn Policy Activities Achievements

City University of Hong Kong (CityU) positions itself as a world-class university, one that provides quality professional education and pursues applicable research in a manner that balances growth with social responsibility and sustainability.

At the suggestion of the former Chairman, the Hon Leung Chun-ying, the Council resolved to set up a Social Responsibility Committee in 2010 to enhance the University's commitment to assess the impact of our activities on the environment and society and ensure that the University's operation and development are managed sensitively and responsibly. This new initiative makes CityU the first local tertiary-level institution to deal with social responsibility issues at Council level. Under a University Charter of Social Responsibility established by the Council, the Social Responsibility Committee is committed to promoting key concepts among the University community.

One of the Committee's key objectives is to teach by example and by participation to foster a strong sense of social responsibility among students — the future leaders of society. Through the concerted efforts of the Council, Court members, staff, alumni and students, we encourage participation in programmes and initiatives so that everyone can articulate their concerns for the planet and the people, particularly in the areas of energy and water conservation, recycling programmes and reducing our carbon footprint and caring for the society to ensure a sustainable future.
