What Is Accounting?
Accounting is a process that identifies, measures and communicates economic information to investors, managers, employees, creditors and the general public to assist in their decision-making. All companies, private or public, big or small, profit making or non-profit making, must have a sound accounting system which forms the basis for allocation of resources, fills reports for regulatory agencies, and prepares annual financial statements for shareholders and investors at the end of the financial year. A good foundation in accounting and related business disciplines will provide students with a strong background to begin a successful career in the business community.

Interdisciplinary Perspective
Accounting cannot exist in isolation and must integrate itself with other disciplines in the knowledge economy such as finance, economics, law, management and information systems. Quality accounting information also contributes to a well developed and efficient capital market.

The rapid developments in the areas of information technology and systems and e-commerce have significant implications for the future roles of professional accountants. They will be called upon to undertake tasks that span the areas of information systems, accounting and finance. It is our commitment to educate our students with the necessary knowledge and skills to integrate knowledge in accounting and other business disciplines, enabling them to function more effectively in the evolving knowledge-based economy. Thus our accounting programmes adopt an interdisciplinary perspective and prepare students to embark on the field of professional accounting in the new economy.

Whole Person Development
The Department implements a wide array of whole person development programmes to train students to become well-rounded and confident individuals. These initiatives have won acclaim from employers in the accounting profession. Our Department is among the first Departments to win the University Award in Maximizing Students'  Learning. This demonstrates our commitment to adding value to our undergraduate students' learning experience both in and out of the classroom.

Beyond the Classroom
The Department has assumed a leading position in educating accounting professionals in Hong Kong. Since it has established close links with the accounting profession, business sectors, as well as local and overseas educational institutions, it keeps itself abreast of the latest changes in the market. It continuously seeks inputs from  professionals in preparing students for meeting the challenges arising from the changing marketplace and emergence of new business platforms including e-business due to the internationalization and globalization. The Department also engages in applied accounting research and consultancy related to accounting practice and gets students involved in research projects and case studies to expose them to real life accounting practices.
