About the Department

The success of Hong Kong as a world centre for finance, communication, trade and international business services depends heavily on communication across both linguistic and cultural boundaries. And there is a demand for graduates with good bilingual skills. The Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics offers undergraduate programmes designed to produce language professionals to meet the needs of Hong Kong's society.

About Our Programmes

The four areas of undergraduate studies—Chinese, Cultural and Heritage Management, linguistics and language technology, and translation and interpretation—focus on the resources of the Department on the nature and functions of language and cultural and heritage management. The four bachelor's degree programmes, BA (Hons) Chinese, BA (Hons) Cultural and Heritage Management, BA (Hons) Linguistics and Language Technology, and BA (Hons) Translation and Interpretation, reflect the Department's mission to provide quality higher education in each of the following disciplines: Chinese language, literature and linguistics; translation and interpretation; linguistics and language technology; cross-cultural studies; and management of culture and heritage.

The BA (Hons) Language Studies a non-government funded top-up degree programme for associate degree and higher diploma holders, provides students with a choice of specialization in Chinese; Translation and Interpretation; Linguistics and Language Technology; Japanese; or Korean.

The Master of Arts in Language Studies (with specializations in Language & Law, Linguistics or Translation & Interpretation) provides students with an understanding of the nature of language and its impact on society and culture in the context of Hong Kong; and creates a framework that allows students to focus on a particular aspect of language or its interaction with a particular societal/cultural process, be it the structure of language, language and law, as well as language, translation and interpretation. The Master of Arts in Chinese aims to provide students with an understanding of the nature of Chinese language and its use for academic and professional purposes; to broaden students' vision on the impact and significance of Chinese culture on Chinese for academic and professional purposes; to familiarize students with the literary tradition of China and its applications in modern society; to meet the increasing demand for more advanced competency in Chinese for professional writing in both the public and private sectors in Hong Kong.
