About the Department
The Department of English is recognized as a leader in educational innovation in the region, based on the teaching and research achievements of an outstanding team of staff of international status and calibre. The teaching activities of the Department currently concentrate on three areas: English for Professional Communication; Second Language Teacher Education; and English for Specific Purposes (Academic and Professional).
There is a strong emphasis on students taking an active role in their learning through lectures, seminars, workshops, field trips and projects. The Department also emphasizes the place of new media and technology in teaching and learning.
The Department's programmes are closely linked with local education and training sectors and communication industries. This is critical in providing the bridging point between university education and the start of a professional career as a teacher or corporate communicator.
About Our Programmes
The Department offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the field of English, namely the BA (Hons) English for Professional Communication, BA (Hons) English for the Professions, MA Teaching English as a Second Language and MA English for Specific Purposes providing a comprehensive programme for the professional development of both professionals and language educators in Hong Kong.
The BA (Hons) English for Professional Communication programme prepares students to work in a wide range of business contexts by providing language proficiency and creative and professional communication skills.
The Department also offers M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees and has graduated research students in the areas of English Applied Linguistics, Discourse Studies and Cultural Studies.
