Nowadays, computers, the Internet, mobile phones and various kinds of electronic products have become indispensable for our daily life. In the decades to come, technology will continue to be a vehicle for advancing all aspects of human life from entertainment, learning, communications, business to banking and finance.
Government's Manpower Projection
The HKSAR Government is committed to developing high value-added industries including electronics and information technology by nurturing a large group of fine scientists, engineers and skilled technicians. In the Government's manpower projection, personnel trained in IT area that comprises computer, electronic, communication and information engineering will have the fastest growth among the five major economic sectors in Hong Kong.
Graduates from our programmes provide essential support to a wide range of economic sectors including technology, communications, banking, finance, trading and business services. They are engaged in jobs related to IT management, application systems development, e-business, Internet services, telecommunications and networking, database, systems programming, hardware support, operation support services, research and product development, as well as IT education and training.
About the Department of Electronic Engineering
Established in 1984, the Department of Electronic Engineering has been developing rapidly. Its achievements are widely acclaimed in Hong Kong and recognized as comparable to the Department's first-rate counterparts overseas.
So far, six spin-off companies have been set up to commercialize technologies developed from our research. A total of 51 patents have been successfully granted with the other 81 in progress.
Education Leading to Professional Careers
The Department places great emphasis on quality and innovative teaching as well as co-curricula activities that enriches students' learning. All courses are taught by experienced professors, five of them having won the Teaching Excellence Awards. We also encourage and sponsor students to join Student Exchange through which they can study abroad for a semester and broaden their horizons. To enable students to gain practical working experience, we provide internship schemes that span from three to twelve months. Some of our final year students were offered jobs by the training companies immediately after the placement. Thanks to the commitment of staff and students, it has become CityU-EE's tradition to sweep top prizes in various open local and international competitions.
