What Is Mathematics?

Mathematics is not only an exciting subject, but also has many important applications in science and technology. It is at the heart of modern commercial and industrial activities. In the past 25 years, mathematics has undergone tremendous development. New theories such as Chaos, Fractals and Wavelets have been introduced and new applications have been developed. Among these are X-ray tomography, mathematical finance, digital information compression, Internet search engine, security for e-commerce and nuclear waste disposa. It appears that the next 25 years will be even more exciting for mathematicians.

About the Department

The Department of Mathematics specializes in applied mathematics, mathematical and numerical methods with applications in engineering and science. Our staff members provide service teaching in the University, since a solid foundation in mathematics is a prerequisite for many programs.

Our strong focus on research activities places us at the forefront of the subject and in close contact with modern uses of mathematics. Programmes offered by the Department are relevant and up-to-date.

We take pride in our academic staff, many of whom are internationally renowned in their fields, and dedicated to teaching and research.

About Our Programme
Introduced in 1994, the BSc (Hons) in Computing Mathematics is unique in Hong Kong. The programme emphasizes the balance between theories and their practical applications, with a special focus on computing and computation.

To provide undergraduates opportunities for futher education, the Department currently offers two taught master programmes, namely MSc in Applied Mathematics and MSc in Mathematics for Finance and Actuarial Science (jointly offered with the Université Paris-Dauphine, France). The Department also offer postgraduates research degree programmes leading to the degrees of Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Philosophy.
