About the Department
The Department of Media and Communication offers academic programs that train students to be professional communicators with the abilities to work not only in a diverse range of conventional mass communication industries (e.g. journalism, television/radio, advertising, public relations, and new media) but also in a new, converged media/information environment. The Department focuses on the essential qualities of professional communicators such as practical skills in using new technologies, abilities to analyze issues systematically and scientifically, and abilities to tackle problems creatively. The programs thus emphasize the development of these qualities and the integration of them.
The programs are taught by a strong team of scholars and educators, who were ranked No. 1 in communication/media research in Hong Kong in the Research Assessment Exercise 2006 conducted by the Hong Kong Government’s Research Grant Committee. Most of the staff members have extensive industry experience, and some of them are continuously active in professional activities. Teaching is supported by a state-of-the-art integrated and inter-compatible digital multimedia platform, which also provides a common digital infrastructure for all the media and applied research on communication in the Department. Specific facilities include digital TV shooting/editing studios, audio recording and advertising shooting/design studios, and new media and eye tracking labs. One set of the labs and studios is currently set up amidst commercial companies in the InnoCenter, and another set will be installed in the landmark Multimedia Building to be completed in 2010.
