Established in 1987, the School of Law offers quality education to undergraduate and postgraduate students. High on our agenda are three goals: becoming a world renowned centre for research and teaching of law; equipping students with global knowledge, skills and perspectives; and establishing a trusted relationship with local and international legal establishments. This trifocal aim is reflected in the composition of our faculty, curriculums and enrichment activities.
Our School is staffed by a stellar international faculty with a multicultural profile, bringing with them a diversity of quality. With joint efforts of staff and students, our School has established expertise in a wide range of fields: Chinese law, comparative law, commercial law, environmental law, constitutional law, human rights, criminal justice, WTO law, international trade and investment law, international economic law, alternative dispute resolution, Hong Kong Basic Law, etc.
To meet the challenges of globalisation by, inter alia, exposing students to international legal education, our School has entered into cooperation and exchange agreements with its counterparts on the Mainland, in Europe, North America and across the Asia-Pacific region. Renowned scholars of other jurisdictions are frequent visitors to our School to deliver talks and lectures, which has become a phenomenon of our School.
Under the Global Legal Education and Awareness Project (G-LEAP), our School has cooperated with Monash University, Australia, and University College, Oxford. Students have the opportunity to study a course at these two universities annually to gain international experience.
Professors from Yale Law School and Oxford Law Faculty offer virtual classes to our students via video-link facilities. What important is that the virtual classes not only enable students to have direct dialogues with world class professors, but also interact with these masterminds whilst in Hong Kong.
Another measure taken by our School is the establishment of an International Advisory Board comprising renowned professors from Harvard, Yale, Oxford and other universities, and leading practitioners to advise the School.
Our School has also concluded a tripartite arrangement for educating Chinese judges. The Supreme People's Court of China, Columbia University School of Law and our Law School select and admit 30 Chinese judges into our LLM programme every year. As our partner, Columbia Law School takes the judges to New York and Washington, D.C. for classes and field study for one month during their study at CityU. The presence of these Chinese judges in our School offers an exceptional and unique opportunity to our students, staff members and practitioners for understanding the Chinese legal system and its development.
We are confident that we are well prepared to welcome the challenges of globalisation.
