Brief Description
CIH HKIH validation in May 2009

Foshan Housing Study Tour
The Department of Public and Social Administration, City University of Hong Kong has been offering the first BA (Hons) in Housing Studies Programme in Hong Kong since September 1998. The BA (Hons) in Housing Studies (BAHS) programme promotes "Total Quality Housing". It places dual emphasis on working with people and their physical built environment. Graduates will work in housing and related organizations (public and private) to promote, sustain and advance "Total Quality Housing" to provide a quality housing environment and community.

Professional Recognition
The programme has obtained full recognition from the Hong Kong Institute of Housing (HKIH) and the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH). The two institutes are regarded as partners in the educational process. Upon completion of the professional bodies' practical experience requirements, graduates will be eligible for admission as corporate members of the HKIH and the CIH. Corporate members of HKIH are eligible for registration as a Registered Professional Housing Managers.

Target Groups
The programme is designed to meet the needs of those seeking a professionally recognised degree in housing studies. Students normally take about 4 years of part-time study to complete the degree. Students who possess a non-housing degree or sub-degree qualification can apply for credit transfer with the course they have completed in other academic programmes against the equivalent courses in our BA (Hons) Housing Studies Programme. Applications are usually considered on a course-by-course basis subject to a maximum transfer of 45 units. For credit transfer of core courses, only courses that have been taken within seven years* prior to the applications will be entertained. (*with reference to time when the programme was completed) This seven-year rule does not apply to Free electives, Out of discipline / General education courses.

We have granted block credit transfer to some designated programmes which have had a high success rate of credit transfer in the past and a few other programmes which cover a large number of courses that are close to the courses our BAHS offers. These programmes include BA Public and Social Administration (CityU), BSocSc Policy Studies and Administration (CityU), BSocSc Administration and Public Management (CityU), Dip Housing Management (HKU SPACE), PGD Facilities Management (HKU SPACE), ASocSc Public Administration and Management (CityU), ASocSc Community Service Management (CityU), ASocSc Facilities Management (CityU) and Dip Facility Management (CityU SCOPE). Additional applications for courses from these programmes which are not covered in the block credit transfer course list can also be made and consideration will be made on a course by course basis. Students can obtain a maximum of 45 credits from the block transfer and the case-by-case transfer combined.

Successful applicants to our programmes in the past few years all have substantial experience in the housing field. Yet in order to expand our student mix, we have earmarked some places for applicants who have no prior housing experience. Students in the final year of their degree or associate degree programme can also apply. This will also help to equip new entrants to the housing field with solid academic knowledge.
