The department welcomes applications for full-time Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree. Our PhD studies extend over three years in the case of MPhil/MA degree holders or four years for non-MPhil/MA degree holders. Every student is supervised by a panel of three academics. Admission Requirements
The minimum academic qualification for the research degree programs is a first-class honours degree (or the equivalent) or a CGPA over 85(out of 100). Applicants whose first language is not English must have a TOEFL (at least 550 points in paper-based or 213 in computer-based total or 79 in internet-based), or an overall band score of 6.5 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or band 6 in Chinese Mainland’s College English Test. Applicants whose medium of instruction was English in the previous degrees may be exempted from the English Language Proficiency Requirement. A research proposal setting out the aims, outlines, and methods of the proposed research should be submitted with the application. Shortlisted candidates will be invited by the Department for an admission interview (either face-to-face or via telephone). The deadline for application is 10 December 2012. Applicants are encouraged to submit applications well ahead of the deadline to avoid last-minute rush.

Financial Assistance
PhD studies at CityU extend over three years for MPhil/MA degree holders or four years for non-MPhil/MA degree holders. Successful applicants are each granted a full studentship of roughly HK$168,000 a year (the equivalent of US$ 21,538). PhD students are eligible for other scholarships and research funds.

HK$3,508 per month (rate for the year 2010-11)
