Prof. Kenneth Leung and Prof. Carol Lin shine at the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva (IEIG) 2024

Researchers from City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) achieved tremendous accolades at the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva (IEIG) by winning a total of 36 awards, including 2 Special Prizes, 8 Gold Medals with Congratulations of the Jury, 10 Gold Medals, 11 Silver Medals and 5 Bronze Medals. Among the CityUHK’s winning teams, 14 of them are start-ups and teams incubated by HK Tech 300.

Amongst those awarded projects, two of start-ups are led by faculties from the School of Energy and Environment, namely Prof. Kenneth Leung and Prof. Carol Lin.  Their success keenly demonstrates SEE’s outstanding research achievements.

IEIG, an annual event dedicated to inventions, provides a unique opportunity for inventors and researchers to present the results of their inventions. The 49th IEIG, held from 17 to 21 April in Geneva at Switzerland, featured more than 1,000 inventions from 38 countries and regions around the world.

Non-sugar Sweetener Derived from Beehive Waste

Goolab Technology is one of the start-up company in HK Tech 300 Cohort 11, which has licensed an IP titled ‘Method of Converting an Organic Waste and Its Product and Use of the Product’ from Prof. Carol Lin’s research team.

This invention promotes the development of non-sugar sweetener, namely ‘Freez Sugar’ from beehive waste for application in beverages. Also, it can provide a healthier alternative to refined sugar and artificial sweeteners while minimizing beekeeping waste generated when rotating hives, reducing impact and pressure on the natural environment.
