Professor Zhiguo Yuan of SEE Received the Global STEM Professorship

We are delighted to announce that Prof. Zhiguo Yuan, Chair Professor of Urban Water Management of the School of Energy and Environment (SEE), City University of Hong Kong (CityU), has been awarded the prestigious "Global STEM Professorship" by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Prof. Yuan joined SEE, CityU as a Chair Professor in May 2023. His research focuses on developing innovative solutions for urban water management and environmental biotechnology by effectively integrating fundamental science and applied engineering. Notably, Prof. Yuan is a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher, and as of February 2023, he has published over 550 papers in peer-reviewed journals, including renowned publications such as Nature, Science, Nature Microbiology, Nature Communications, PNAS, Energy and Environmental Science, Water Research (over 170 papers), and Environmental Science and Technology (over 60 papers). His work has garnered over 46,000 citations, resulting in an impressive h-index of 118. He has received numerous accolades for his research achievements and leadership, including the 2015 ATSE Clunies Ross Award (a top technology award in Australia) and the 2014 IWA Global Project Innovation Award (Applied Research Category). In 2015, Prof. Yuan was named one of Engineers Australia's Top 100 Most Influential Engineers. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE), an IWA Distinguished Fellow, and was granted the highly prestigious ARC Australian Laureate Fellowship in 2017. In January 2019, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia. Prof Yuan serves as the Editor-in-Chief of Water Research X and was one of the Editors of Water Research from 2017 to 2022.

The "Global STEM Professorship" scheme aims to enhance support for Hong Kong universities to attract globally renowned scholars in innovation and technology. By bringing these distinguished scholars to Hong Kong, the scheme seeks to elevate teaching and research activities, expand the innovation and technology talent pool, and ultimately bolster the universities' capacities in commercializing and applying their research discoveries. This initiative also encourages technology and knowledge transfer to benefit the community and drive innovation and technology development in Hong Kong.
