Visit to China Light and Power – Nuclear Resource Centre (Kowloon Bay) on 29 March 2014

A group of 21 postgraduate students studied the course, SEE6101/8111 Energy Generation and Storage Systems, led by Dr. Denis YU and Teaching Assistant, Wenguang FAN, visited the the Nuclear Resource Centre on 29 March 2014. Students enjoyed in-depth presentations by our guide about the operation of a nuclear power plant through displays, videos and interactive games. Special focus was on the safety features at Daya Bay, located 50km away from the city centre of Hong Kong. Backup power supplies from 3 different external sources ensure that even if there is an internal power failure, the reactors can still be shut down properly. Additional measures were taken to protect the plant against tsunami and other potential hazards.
