Due to significant advancements in computer hardware/software technology and automated data collection systems, there are tremendous opportunities for interdisciplinary research in combining quantitative modeling (e.g., statistics, data mining, machine learning, simulation, and operations research) with technology-driven engineering and domain knowledge to make significant social and economic impacts (through applications in manufacturing, bio- and nano- materials, energy and environment, health science, banking and finance). Given the complexity and huge amount of data streams in modern science and engineering systems, efficient and effective quantitative modeling techniques and implementation strategies are urgently needed for quality engineering, process monitoring and surveillance, data and knowledge mining, planning and decision making, and system performance optimization.
The objective and niche of CSIE is to create the best "collaborative" environment that allows researchers to develop the most updated state-of-the-art modeling methodologies and tools within the recent technology breakthrough application domain areas in:
Currently, modeling researchers and domain area researchers often conduct research independently. It is common for domain area researchers to adopt only ordinary and standard modeling tools in their experimental design, data analysis, and system optimization, which may limit the significance of their research findings. Even though they may sometimes collaborate with modeling researchers, the collaboration is often at a primitive level and modeling researchers do not get chance to fully understand the domain problems and develop new state-of-the-art modeling methodology and strategy. The modeling team members in the research centre either have been conducting the state-of-the-art modeling research or are well connected with the well recognized experts in the modeling research field. The domain area expert team members are well known in the fields of public health, energy and environment, and bio- and nano- science. Supported by internal and external funding from the Centre, modeling researchers and domain area researchers will work closely to produce new state-of-the-art modeling strategy and methodology as well as scientific and engineering breakthrough findings and results, which will be published in top-notch methodology journals as well as science and engineering journals and proceedings such as Science, Nature, and PNAS.
