CityU School of Law Virtual Commencement for Class of 2022                                                             

Given the grave situation of the COVID-19 pandemic in Spring 2022, the College/School Commencement for the Class of 2022 at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) needed to be held virtually.  The School of Law Commencement was hence pre-recorded and live broadcasted on 29 May 2022 (Sunday) at 11:30am.

Professor TAN Cheng-Han, SC, Dean of CityU School of Law, presided at the ceremony. Professor TAN and our graduate representatives, Mr TUNG Hoo Tien Griffin and Ms Karen LO, each gave an address to our graduates.

	Professor TAN Cheng-Han first gave an address to our graduates. “The School of Law,” he said, “is proud of you and like your parents, the School will take pleasure in the success that you will enjoy in the years ahead.” He then shared four pieces of advice with our graduates: “First, learning does not end at university. Second, honesty is the best policy – in all that you do, do it with integrity. Third, be adaptable because things will change. Lastly, you WILL make mistakes and there are times you WILL feel very down. You must then find the core of strength within yourself, pick yourself up and move on while not forgetting the lessons learnt. Difficult times will pass and you will strength to persevere during such periods.” Finally, he thanked the graduates for putting their faith in the School of Law and entrusting their university education to the School, and congratulated them warmly on their wonderful achievement.
Mr TUNG Hoo Tien Griffin, the LLB graduate representative of 2022 graduating class, shared his insights with the audience. He said, “your job is not to succeed. It may be to play a part in this system we call a society, to be an actor on this stage we call life. But at the end of the day, it is just a job. Do not forget to live.” He went on to share that “remember that it is not the heights you reach that define you. It is what you do at your darkest hour, your greatest failure, in your deepest sorrow; your response in those moments are what defines the depths of your character. It is how you pick yourself up after you fall, that makes you who you are. It is grit and resilience, not wit or intelligence, that ensure success. I hope that in the pursuit of your goals, you will find a balance, to live and let live; but never compromise who you are.”
	Ms Karen LO, the JD graduate representative of 2022 graduating class, gladly announced that “we have finally conquered the JD. But we could not come this far on our own. The deepest gratitude must go to our families who unconditionally supported us as we headed back off to be students again. I would also like to thank our friends for understanding the demands of our studies, …… [and] our beloved professors for your inspiration, passion and the flowchart summary.” She urged her peers to “never forget why we started this programme, because that reason will be the engine that drives us through all the difficult times and help us become the best that we can be.”

The Commencement marks just the beginning of yet another journey for the graduates. The School of Law is confident that our graduates will stay strong and stand firm amidst the changing times, and wishes them all the very best.
