Building AI Knowledge and Skills for Curriculum Development 2024-25

Building AI Knowledge and Skills for Curriculum Development 2024-25

Do you want to increase your knowledge and sharpen your skills for integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into your university courses?

The Talent and Education Development Office (TED) can help you through its academic staff development programme entitled “Building AI Knowledge and Skills for Curriculum Development 2024-25.” By building up your knowledge and skills through this programme, you will be better able to integrate AI into your courses and be better prepared to take on larger, funded AI projects in education in the future.

Presentation Materials:

  • What are the important dates for the programme?

    The programme launches on February 1, 2024.
    The programme concludes in July, 2025.

  • Who may register?

    All full-time CityU academic staff may register for Stage One and, upon successful completion, proceed to Stage Two. In addition, for Stage Two participants a Teaching Development Grant (TDG) approval system will review micro-proposals you may wish to submit for integrating AI into one of your Semester A and/or Semester B 2024-25 CityU courses. The system aims to facilitate timely approval of satisfactory TDG AI action research plan micro-proposals.

    Full-time academic staff nominated by the other UGC-funded universities may register for Stage One. Contact your university’s Centre for Teaching and Learning for details on nomination.

  • What are the Intended Learning Outcomes for each stage of the programme?

    By the completion of all three components of Stage One, participants will be able to:

      • Describe four basic approaches to conceptualizing AI and its power, types, and basic pedagogy considerations;
      • Evaluate the effectiveness of state-of-the art AI for use in university courses;
      • Formulate an Action Research Plan for integrating AI into a university course.

    By the completion of all three components of Stage Two, participants will be able to:

      • Plan an Action Research project for integrating AI into one of their university courses;
      • Execute the Action Research project during Semester A and/or Semester B, 2024-25;
      • Reflect on the outcomes of the Action Research project through participation in an AI in Learning and Teaching Symposium 2024-25 in July, 2025.

  • What content is included in the two stages of the programme?

    Stage One has three components, or sequential steps:

      • Completion of the video-based, on-line module AI in Teaching, Learning, and Assessment, which discusses four basic approaches to conceptualizing AI; the power of AI; types of AI; and considerations for using AI in teaching, learning and assessment The module includes pre- and post-quizzes (with a post-quiz score of at least 70% to proceed to the next component) and should be completed by March 2, 2024;
      • o Participation in the on-campus, face-to-face seminar State-of-the-Art Artificial Intelligence Products for Teaching, Learning and Assessment to be held on the CityU campus on March 4, 2024;
      • Participation in the on-campus, face-to-face seminar Action Research for AI in Teaching, Learning and Assessment to be held on the CityU campus on March 4, 2024.

    Completion of the second seminar also requires the submission of a satisfactory one-page description [~350-450 words] of a potential action research project for integrating AI into a particular course. The submission is due no later than May 15, 2024 (Submission of an AIAR plan may substitute). Besides the personal particulars, the submission should be organized into three sections with a heading for each:

        • Description: Describe how the AR project would be carried out in that course [~150 – 200 words];
        • Learning Principles: Describe how principles of effective learning are integrated [~150 – 200 words];
        • Conclusion: Make a conclusion in ~50 words or less.

    Successful completion of all the components in Stage One will earn registered participants a Certificate of Completion in AI in Education, awarded by the Talent and Education Development Office (TED) of CityU, which may be reported on their annual performance appraisal submission.

    Full-time CityU academic staff may register for Stage Two upon completion of Stage One.

    Stage Two has three components, or sequential steps, and is available for CityU academic staff who complete Stage One.

      • Development of a plan for an Artificial Intelligence Action Research project for integrating AI (“The AIAR Plan”) into one of their CityU courses in Semester A and/or Semester B, 2024-25. The AIAR Plan should include the action research project written assignment which was submitted for the second seminar in Stage One (see above), with additional well-developed sections in the body of the plan for the Schedule and Budget, and is due no later than May 15, 2024. In addition, CityU academic staff who proceed to this component may also apply for expedited approval of a Teaching Development Grant for an AI Action Research Project of 80K – 100K HKD. To do so, The AIAR Plan should also be submitted to the Chair of the TDG Committee via TED no later than May 15, 2024. Successful applications are planned to be announced in July, 2024.
      • Implementation of The AIAR Plan for integrating AI into one of their CityU courses in Semester A and/or Semester B, 2024-25;
      • Participation in sharing the AIAR Plan through participation in an AI in Learning and Teaching Symposium 2024-25. Participation should include a reflection which briefly describes The AIAR Plan, discuss its implementation and the results, and consider modifications for future iterations. The format will be Panopto, produced in collaboration with the TED studio staff, after Semester B for the July symposium.

    Successful completion of all the components in Stage Two will earn registered participants a Certificate of Completion with Honours in AI in Education, awarded by the Talent and Education Development Office (TED) of CityU, which may be reported on their annual performance appraisal submission.

  • How can I register?
      • CityU full-time academic staff may register here for Stage One.
      • Full-time academic staff at the other UGC-funded universities should contact their university’s Centre for Teaching and Learning.
