International Day of Women and Girls in Science is observed on February 11th each year. On this day, we celebrate the women and girls who have shattered barriers and paved the way for future generations of scientists.

It is an opportunity where we at JCC, reaffirm our commitment to gender equality and encourage young minds to explore the endless possibilities. This day celebrates the accomplishments and innovations of women scientists, showcasing their contributions to research, technology, and scientific advancements. This day serves as an inspiration for young girls and students to pursue studies and careers in fields, that challenge stereotypes and biases.

The college aspires for greater inclusion of women in decision-making processes and leadership roles within the scientific community. Getting women in top leadership positions is critical, but it is also not enough. At JCC, we aim at recognizing the role of women and girls in science as agents of change and the importance of mainstreaming a gender perspective in the achievement of the sustainable development goals. These goals encompass economic prosperity, social justice, and environmental integrity.

Traditional gender roles, conscious and unconscious biases, discriminatory attitudes and norms continue to pose barriers to women’s full and meaningful participation. Society will not enjoy peace for equitable inclusive socio-economic sustainable development if they do not benefit from women experts and professionals’ leadership.

On the 6th of February, 2024, City University of Hong Kong celebrated the ‘International Day of Women and Girls in Science.’
