If a group of management sciences professors at City University have their way, the Centa-City Index, a winner of CityU's prestigious Applied Research Excellence Awards in 2001, may become as widely accepted and creditable as the Hang Seng Index in measuring the territory's economic health.
In a display of its commitment to the advancement of teaching and research in the region, IBM China/Hong Kong Ltd has donated an e-business software package worth more than HK$14 million to CityU.
Research and postgraduate education were the focus of CityU's ninth University Development Forum, held on 18 September. The open presentation gave four focus groups the opportunity to present their observations and members of staff the opportunity to provide feedback on the recommendations.

For here was a robot capable of crawling through cramped ventilation ducts for inspection and cleaning, a robotic petrol-filling station, a fearless robot that can scale the walls of high-rise buildings and clean windows, and a robotic muscle arm for nursing, just to name a few.
"I wish the industrial training could be longer than it is now," said Ada Chan Hiu Kei, a third-year student in the computer engineering stream of the Department of Electronic Engineering. "I also think that the scheme should be extended to students from other faculties as well."
China's rapid economic development and the growing co-operation in trade between Hong Kong and the mainland have resulted in increasing business opportunities. To provide our second-year students majoring in China Business with experience and in-depth knowledge of the mainland's economic environment, the Department of Marketing organized a two-week Summer Study Tour Workshop on Business Management in Beijing in June.
A handbook for university students -- written by university students -- is now available at the First-Year Student Support Centre from 10 to 28 September.

To establish closer links and encourage mutual collaboration with local secondary schools, CityU for the fourth year organized the Teachers Update Course (TUC). From 19 June and from 27-29 June, TUC 2001 covered 12 sessions, including three new subjects: Chinese Language and Culture, Web Teaching and Teaching Enhancement. Other subjects, such as Biology, Chemistry, Computer Studies and the Use of English, are offered free of charge to the secondary school teachers by CityU academic staff.
